Government Early Warning Network Hacked
On 7 January 2019, a hacker breached the Early Warning Network (EWN), an emergency alert service used by councils. The hacker sent messages via text, email and landline to tens of thousands of people across Australia.
The alert stated "EWN has been hacked. Your personal data is not safe. Trying to fix the security issues." The alert ended with a support email link and a link to unsubscribe from the service.
The attack could have been much wider spread, but the EWN was able to identify and stop it shortly after it began by shutting off their systems.
Thankfully for recipients of the warning, the links contained within were not harmful, and the attack is now the subject of an ongoing police investigation.
The damage caused by these types of cyber attacks (often referred to as nuisance attacks) is disruption to business, reputational damage and loss of consumer confidence.
Sadly for many businesses, the aftermath of any cyber attack can be crippling. We urge all businesses to review cyber security measures now. It is important to focus on both preventing breaches and planning your response should a successful attack occur.
